I say this to preface my disappointment with this book. I used to devour the books in this series immediately but this one and the one before it have been hard for me to finish.
Before they were compelling and page turning but now they are very slow and even mundane. I still love the historical facts but lately there's not as much of a story built around them.
I think the series needs more than Cotton, Cassiopeia, Stephanie and Danny. Cotton was at his best when he was paired with Danny's nephew. If you're on the fence about this one it's easily skipped without missing anything that would be important for the next book. I really hope the next one is more like the old ones but I think I'll be waiting to read the sample instead of buying it sight unseen again, the lost order steve berry free download.
There are a lot of things you will learn in this book, based on what has actually happened in the past. You are going to meet two of the most despicable people and you will be charmed by a love story. The entire novel takes place over about 3 days.

It is, quite frankly, glossed over in history courses by the teachers concentrating on politics and economics. Berry, thank you very much, goes out of his way to show us things that we will never get to know about because most historians are too enveloped in trying to prove a point, rather than just presenting all history.
Mysteries are not "just mysteries" they are things that you don't know about. And there is a lot of US history that isn't hidden so much as ignored. And Mr. Berry doesn't ignore it, he pulls it front and center so that you think WOW I didn't know that. It is gold hidden by a secret order of Confederates and everyone who has ever heard about it has looked for it.
The secret order is actually, you will discover, a group that Cotton's great grandfather belonged to. And you will discover why Cotton is named Cotton. Kudos to Mr. Berry on the conundrum. Even if you find the Civil War [a really stupid name for a war: Civil] boring, you will find this novel fascinating, the characters interesting and the entire plot probable. This time out Cotton is engaged with solving an old Smithsonian mystery surrounding a secret post Civil War society, a stash of gold, and a plot to remake the US government. Both Cotton and Cassiopeia are involved, but largely separate from one another, while Stephanie is pulled in, but spends most of the tale on her back.
Ex-president Daniels also joins the fray as he's not quite ready for retirement. The story suffers from simply too much convenience, engineered for plot sake. The old mystery surrounds a former confederate secret society, long thought to have died off, the lost order steve berry free download. This society that no one knows about has managed to maintain themselves for well over years with multiple prominent politicians and other officials holding high office in the group.
At the same time, the society has managed to engage many others, handed down from father to son, as guardians of their stashes with no one the wiser. Cotton conveniently had a grandfather who relayed all the society info to him as a boy and happens to have the group's original Confederate lead spy and society head as a distant relative. To further invoke convenience, President Daniels' good friend and senator has recently died under mysterious conditions, the lost order steve berry free download, while his wife, the widow happens to be the daughter of a former Smithsonian curator and has been schooled about the society, while her brother has attained some degree of influence in representing local, regional, and state governments pushing for Congressional reform which was mostly aspirational as a side issue of little consequence.
